Work Standing Up is a story about one man's decision to be deliberate in his choices about where he lived and how he lived it. It is a testimony that where one comes from has almost nothing to do with what one can achieve; that it is truly possible to make a good living as an artist. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Fontaine discovered early a talent for drawing and painting, and not much else. He was a product of the Depression, yet managed to graduate from Yale, paint in the Virgin Islands, and paint in Italy as a soldier during World War II. Rather than returning to the United States, he remained in Germany as the art director for Stars and Stripes-and stayed for 25 years, painting and exhibiting with the finest European and American abstractionists, such as Willi Baumeister and Alexander Calder. In 1970, he moved with his family to Mexico for another 25 years, and finally Austin, Texas, for the last four years of his life. He and his wife were expatriates but also essentially ambassadors for America's cultural aesthetic. Whether holding court among his peers, living in a tent, or buying art, Fontaine's approach was to study, immerse, and act.Art historians Margaret Stenz, Mary Brantl, and Robert Linsley each provide investigations into Fontaine's art during the different periods of his working career the Depression era, postwar Germany, and finally Mexico. In this first book-length treatise on Fontaine, readers will experience his work and, through previously unpublished photographs, also his community of artists that survived the war in Europe. Fontaine's daughter, Claudia Chidester, offers a biographical section, which is centered around the lessons learned from Fontaine-on topics from marrying well to obtaining valuable press credentials. Taken altogether, this extraordinary book sets forth an intimate and detailed portrait of a global artist who lived and worked for most of the twentieth century.

I don't even know all that much about art. But I do know about psychology, and what makes for a life artfully lived. Read through that lens, this book is about art, yes, but also about a man, a life of impact, and how that impact was achieved. For this reason, I bought the book, and find it interesting and important. Those who love history will also enjoy it because of the Fontaines' place in protecting European art following WWII.

Whether you love art, history, psychology, or simply a story well-told, you'll love this book.

I love how the author shares the wisdom she learned from her father, Page 19 what seems like an obstacle may be an opportunity. So true! The author has so many interesting stories and opportunities she got to experience. I feel fortunate that she took the time, energy and work to turn it into a book, and thus share the wisdom she has learned; I particularly appreciate the simplicity and ease of the layout of the book. Congratulations Claudia for a job well done.

Work Standing Up captivated my attention from cover to cover. The photographs of Paul Fontaine's works are stunning. The story of his rise in the art world from his college years at Yale to post-war Germany, to Mexico and finally Austin is fascinating. Intertwined with the photographs of his expressive paintings, Claudia Chidester has drawn the viewer in with a rich collection of his writings and musings about art and life's lessons. Paul Fontaine lived the true life of an artist, all the more interesting due to the historical times. The book itself is a work of art.
So many of my artist friends agonize about how to make art full-time and still manage to pay the rent and eat. Claudia Fontaine Chidester wrote an incredible book about growing up with her father, and lessons learned (disguised as an art monograph of stunning Abstract Expressionist paintings). Everything from 'Make friends, be friendly and have friends in every city'...to 'Work standing up'.

It's a bare retelling of life with an artist who supported himself his whole career making paintings, and amassed an incredible collection of art by trading and bartering (unreal). Love the art, and the book is a memorable read. Totally worth the $$, don't hesitate to buy it for someone and snag one for yourself.
Of course I'm biased since the artist is my grandfather, but I agree with professional publishers involved with "Work Standing Up" that the effort is so magnificent that an independent publishing award is deserved. I've never read an art book that's so personal. The speech by the "german" contributor at the Baylor art show brought to life her chapter in the book; who knew what an impact Fontaine had in the abstract movement. She even quoted the artist as saying he believed he "was involved in the greatest transformation in the history of art". It is significant probably that Baumeister and Hartung had such an influence during Fontaine's stay in Darmstadt, and the germans must have benefited from Fontaine's prowess as well - the countless german artists who signed the Fontaine guest book - with impromptu scriblings that border on art - certainly suggest a thriving salon of creativity and friendship. And of course Fontaine was the only American invited to their expressionist art group. Where Fontaine really made his mark on abstract art though wasn't in Europe; it was during his isolation in Mexico where his decentralized, color experiences took root. It is emotionally appreciated by my family, too, that my aunts Claudia and Gigi dedicated the tome to my late mother, Carol Fontaine. Go to Fontaine.org to see all the paintings from the 1940s through the 1990s.
