Bloodstains is the startling tale of one man’s search for the truth after inheriting the personal diaries belonging to his great-great-grandfather who he discovers was America’s first and most notorious serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett. Better known by his alias H.H. Holmes, Mudgett was the mass murderer who struck terror into the nation by being the proprietor of the infamous Murder Castle and stalking the streets of Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair. During his incarceration awaiting execution, well over a century ago, Holmes admitted killing 27 innocent victims, but the evidence the author locates indicates hundreds more likely. From his investigation, Jeff Mudgett, the direct descendant, learns that Holmes’ reign of terror was worldwide and not limited to Chicago as has been so widely believed. Based upon never before revealed historical facts, Jeff pieces together a dynamic and extraordinary puzzle, including the strong possibility that Holmes was also Jack the Ripper.
Far more than a documentary, Bloodstains is precariously balanced on the very edge between non-fiction and the paranormal, as the author’s research of his evil ancestor quickly takes on a personal aspect. Jeff soon fears his efforts may have awakened the legendary ‘Holmes Curse’ of the 1890s, the one investigated and written about by most of the nation’s major publications, including The New York Times. In fact, the deeper he digs into Holmes’ devilish past, the stronger the monster’s hold on him seems to become, testing the limits of his own sanity, as well as humanity. Racked by a mysterious and never before experienced epilepsy, Jeff suffers crippling grand mal seizures whenever he disobeys the haunting voices in his head. Finally, with nowhere else to turn, Jeff is forced to make the decisions of his genetic lifetime in a life-or-death struggle in order to win the greatest prize of all his survival.
Bloodstains edition by Jeff Mudgett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
This is one of the few books I have read that I wished I could get my money back for. As a historian, I cringe at the inaccuracies... let me give you just one example. There is much made in this tome about Holmes being Jack the Ripper, but when it comes to writing about it, the author cannot even get facts correct about the ship he says Holmes crossed ont. The RMS Etruria never docked in Southampton; Liverpool was her port of call in England. There are court documents that prove Holmes was in Chicago when he was supposed to have been on this crossing along with a lot of other documents that discount most of what was written here about the "infamous murder castle". I have been researching the real story of H.H. Holmes for a long time and it is really sad to me that this is going to be presented as a history channel special next month. I'm really hoping they are going to blow this out of the water, but I have my doubts since TV these days only cares about entertainment and not fact.Is it telling that this book is listed as "fiction?" I believe it is.

Bloodstains edition by Jeff Mudgett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
If you read it as fiction you could say it's a good book. Read it as non fiction and you'll be highly disappointed. I believe this is also why the reviews are mixed. You can instantly tell which the reviewer read the book as.
It's a fiction based on a non fiction subject.
Beginning was great, middle boring, epilogue explained more than the last 20 something chapters.
I saw the documentary on television. The body in the grave turned out to be!!?? I want tell you unless you ask if you didn't see the show. A good ghost story, but true? I don't think so. Whether imagined or mental psychosis is not for me to say. Is it the truth about holmes?? I doubt it. It IS an interesting story of one man's life journey.
The life of H.H. Holmes, an extra-smart and bizarre serial killer, makes for good reading. That the author is in the family line of Holmes is an interesting viewpoint, at first. When writer Mudgett starts talking about the hot, evil blood of his great-grandfather running through his veins, almost forcing him to murder in the name of genetics, my eye-rolling made it hard to continue reading. Otherwise, it's a pretty good look at the morbid lore that still surrounds the 19th-century monster.
I like Jeff Mudgett...seems like a great guy. Here is the problem that I had with Bloodstains It reads more like an inner conflict story than fact. The whole problem that I have with Herman Webster Mudgett is this....the man was a liar..plain and simple. He lived during a time when it did not take much to shock the public and H H Holmes played that to the fullest. I do not believe for one moment that he killed as many people as he claimed...the man was a con artist, nothing more. Like all history, if facts are known, the truth is boring compared to the tall tales that emerge, especially based off the oratory of a man that was so obviously a liar. If you were able to go back in time and see the truth,I think most people would find that Herman Webster Mudgett was no different from the boring kid that embellishes his life to be remembered.......Herman Mudgett would have made a better fiction writer than a serial killer.
I heard Jeff on coast to coast and thought I would check out this book. I didn't know about this guy and I live in Chicago so it was cool. I think this guy holmes had more than one castle. this was an interesting read albeit the bad editing, which I could manage, but it should have been edited better .
this story could not have been really happening. Maybe to Jeff, and I believe demons can be amongst u, and tumors rumored do strange things to our brains but I think there is is quite a bit of make believe woven amongst the history. If these things were true, Much more documentation and sources should be offered. I think it was a good enough story and could be a Cool movie. I can't imagine having this family history. But evidence as Holmes as the ripper should really be investigated it is compelling and I think would be to looked into.
It's a rare book that makes a mark on your soul so profoundly that you know it will remain with you for the rest of your life. Bloodstains is that book, the only one since Truman Capote's In Cold Blood that kept me awake at night, terrified by the evil that inhabits some men's souls.
The true story begins with the author's mother, a woman so convinced of a lineage to General Robert E. Lee that she paid professionals to find the evidence. While they dismissed the claim to Lee, they instead uncovered an ancestor not only famous but infamous-America's first serial killer.
H. H. Holmes did not shoot someone from afar or quickly slice their necks, which would be bad enough; he tortured them in ways my mind cannot even fathom. The author's claim that he was truly evil is an understatement.
But this book is much more than the publication of Holmes' meticulous notes. It is the journey of a descendent that placed the pieces together like a tapestry that led to his own life, his own DNA. It is the story of a man faced with the incredulous information that he carries the blood of a man that could best be described as your worst Satanic nightmare, and how he resisted it, plunged into it and came out the other side.
This book is not for the faint of heart. It is very well written and from the first page, it will grab you and refuse to let you go, even in your deepest sleep, until the very end. Recommended-if you have the courage.
This is one of he books that claims to be true, yet really is a novel. I can understand Jeff Mudgett wanting to write about his infamous ancestor, but this book departs so much from the known facts about H.H. Holmes that I found it more irritating than anything else. If you like fan-zines, this may be a hit with you, but for someone who really wants to learn more about a real person and events, just skip this one.
